Mikula abruptly resigns as New London baseball coach

New London — Jon Mikula resigned as the baseball coach at New London High School last weekend, following an altercation between two of his players and what he called year-long lack of administrative support.

Mikula, a who graduated from New London High in 1992, went to the field to coach the game last Saturday against Valley Regional, but resigned before the game began.

"There was an altercation earlier in the day between two players and I just felt it was the right time," Mikula said.

He would not elaborate as to the identity of the players.

"I was going to resign at the end of the season anyway," Mikula said, "because of lack of administrative help and support over problems with parents and players."

Mikula was an assistant football coach for the Whalers last fall. He was the quarterback of New London's 1991 state championship football team.

New London principal Tommy Thompson declined to comment.
