Cheshire — The CIAC announced Monday afternoon that it has postponed all of its high school football state playoff quarterfinal games from Tuesday to Wednesday.

The extra day, the CIAC said in a release, is "due to the continuing forecast of inclement weather and a need to allow host schools adequate time to prepare their facilities."

The decision means two local teams, plus two more Eastern Connecticut Conference schools, will play their games on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Waterford, the No. 2 seed in Class M, will host No. 7 Granby/Canton while Norwich Free Academy, the No. 8 seed in Class LL, will visit top-seeded Newtown. In addition, No. 3 Killingly will host No. 6 New Fairfield in a Class M game while No. 8 Plainfield will play No. 1 Ansonia in a Class S game at Derby High School.

The CIAC also announced that its semifinal round has been moved from Sunday at 12:30 p.m. until Monday, Dec. 9, at 6:30 p.m., at the site of the higher seed, adding, "barring additional schedule changes, the football championships are still scheduled for Saturday, December 14 with two games apiece at Trumbull High School and Willow Brook Park in New Britain.

"Given the number of sites and games for the football postseason and the importance of maintaining equal and appropriate recovery for all teams, in consultation with the schools and tournament director we felt it best to reschedule the entire quarterfinal round of games."
