    Local roundup: Montville boys edge Killingly 60-59 as Hawkins beats the buzzer

    Killingly — Bernard Hawkins hit a shot at the buzzer to lift Montville to a 60-59 boys' basketball victory over Killingly on Monday afternoon.

    Eddie Reyes assisted on the basket for the Indians, who improved to 2-0.

    Hawkins finished with 15 points and four steals for Montville while Zach Southard had 15 points and six rebounds, Antonio Brown had a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Reyes finished with 11 points and eight assists.

    In other games:

    • Walker Baillargeon scored 21 points, including three 3-pointers, as St. Bernard defeated Stonington 61-54 in a rematch of the 2019 ECC Division II tournament championship game. Freshman Tyson Wheeler added 18 points for the Saints (2-0), who led 43-32 after three quarters. Zach Scott, who scored his 1,000th career points in Stonington's opener, scored 14 points to lead the Bears (1-1) while Anthony Fry and Dorian White added 11 points apiece.

    • Kyhol Kershaw had 19 points and nine rebounds as Fitch broke open a close game in the third quarter to defeat Norwalk 73-62 in a nonleague road game. The Falcons (2-0), who led 33-26 at halftime, outscored the Bears 21-11 in the third quarter to take control, 54-37. Yaniel Hernandez added 12 points for Fitch while Ajia Brown finished with 11.

    • Nick Tiziani scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers as Bacon Academy rolled to a 55-31 nonleague win over Norwich Tech. Jay Johnson scored 14 points to lead the Warriors (0-2). Bacon is 1-1.

    • Parish Hill defeated Grasso Tech 56-43 in a non-league game. Donnel Brown led the Eagles (0-2) with 18 points and Jacob Cortes added 10. 

    Girls' basketball

    • Fitch outscored Woodstock Academy 12-1 in the first quarter and went on to a 41-32 victory over the Centaurs in Groton. Charlotte Carney had a double-double for the Falcons (2-1), 12 points and 17 rebounds, while Alyssa Virtue added 11 points and five assists and Nyseannah Ishmael scored nine points.

    • Molly Butremovic scored 15 points while Addie Hauptmann made a free throw with two seconds left as Wheeler edged Montville 32-31. The Lions are 1-1. Alexis Michon scored 10 points for the Indians (1-1) while Emma Hillman added nine points and five steals.

    • Ady Gonzalez scored 22 points, including six 3-pointers, as Windham rolled to a 67-21 nonleague win over Norwich Tech. Geovanna Taitague had eight points and seven rebounds for Norwich Tech (2-1).

    H.S. wrestling

    • Jeremiah Irizary captured individual honors at 120 pounds to highlight East Lyme/Norwich Tech's third-place finish at the Eagles Holiday Bash in Turner Falls, Mass. The Vikings had four wrestlers reach the championship round with JJ Morse (106), Michael Minevich (138) and Roark Ryan (220) all placing second.

    H.S. swimming

    • East Lyme remained unbeaten with a 101.5-83.5 nonleague win over Brookfield. The Vikings (3-0) won only two individual events but swept the three relays. Jay Lin won the 100-yard butterfly (54.85 seconds) for East Lyme and Robert Hahn captured the 100 breaststroke (1:05.79). Lin and Hahn joined Eric Wang and Ryan Huang to win the 200 medley relay (1:45.88) while Wang, Hawken Hammen, David Day and Noam Sokolovsky won the 300 freestyle relay (1:38.83) and Lin, Huang, Wang and Hahn won the 400 freestyle relay (3:38.54).

    H.S. hockey

    • Evan Tower and Steve Turchetta had two goals and one assist apiece as the Eastern Connecticut Eagles routed Housatonic/NW Regional/Wamogo/Torrington 5-1 in a Nutmeg Conference game at Connecticut College's Dayton Arena. The game was tied a 1-1 when the Eagles (3-1) broke the game open with three goals in the second period. Ryan LoVetere added a power play goal for the Eagles (3-1), assisted by Tower and Turchetta, while Will Cannella assisted on Turchetta's first goal in the opening period and goalie Rylin Fowler stopped 21 shots.

    College honors

    • UConn's Olivia Nelson-Ododa was named American Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Week in women's basketball with Central Florida's Kay Kay Wright. Nelson-Ododa, a sophomore forward, averaged 23 points, 9.5 rebounds, 5.5 blocks and four assists per-game during a 2-0 week for the unbeaten Huskies, including career highs of 27 points and 15 rebounds in UConn's 97-53 win over Oklahoma on Sunday at Mohegan Sun Arena. Wright averaged 23.3 points and 3.7 assists per-game during a 3-0 week for the Knights.

    • New London's India Pagan, a 6-foot-1 junior at Stony Brook, was named America East Player of the Week in women's basketball for the first time in her career. Pagan averaged 13 points and 11 rebounds in wins over Morgan State and Western Michigan at the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan. The had 16 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in the win over Morgan State, the second double-double of her career. The Seawolves are 11-1.
