Checking in with ... Olivia Quagan (East Lyme)

Olivia Quagan's mother, Alison, retrieved her daughter's No. 17 jersey from East Lyme High School softball coach Judy Deeb and used it to decorate the Quagans' front door, in tribute to Quagan's lost senior year due to COVID-19. Quagan has been a four-year member of the East Lyme varsity team and was an ECC Division I all-star last year at pitcher. She will attend the University of Rhode Island and major in education. (Editor's note: The Day will be publishing a profile of a spring athlete for each day of the canceled high school athletic season.)

    School: East Lyme High School

    Class: Senior

    Sport: Softball

    Position: Pitcher, first base

College choice: University of Rhode Island

    Chosen major: Education

Athlete you grew up admiring: Dustin Pedroia and Jennie Finch, I always loved watching Pedroia because he always put in 110% on the field. My mom always told me to play like Pedroia. I admired Jennie Finch because she was a pitcher. ... I also had the chance to meet her at one of my softball tournaments which was really cool.

    Favorite high school class: English

Checking in with Olivia: "The idea to hang up my jersey and decorate my front door was my mom's. She saw it on Facebook from other families honoring their children's spring seasons being taken away from them, too. It means a lot to me that she did it because it makes me proud."

What you need to know about Olivia: Quagan is the daughter of former Ledyard High School football and baseball standout Mike Quagan, but Olivia has always known her dad as "coach." "He was my coach up until high school, but he still helps me improve as a player all the time," she said. "He has been my biggest supporter since the second grade. Looking back on it now, I wish I thanked him a little more and appreciated each game he was there to coach me because time went by so fast and now I'm graduating." Quagan picked an unusual doubleheader during her freshman year as her career highlight at East Lyme. The Vikings had a regular-season game against rival Waterford — a 9-6 win — rescheduled for the same day as their Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament opener. Quagan pitched both. "I knew that everyone was expecting a lot out of me and they believed in me, which helped me gain the confidence to pitch the best I could," she said. Quagan was an ECC Division I all-star last season at pitcher. She is a four-year member of the varsity, a Red Sox fan and has wanted to be a teacher since she was 7. Her favorite restaurant in East Lyme is Osaka, where she is partial to the hibachi chicken and fried rice. Said Quagan: "To the one other senior on my team, Angie Venditti, thank you for these 10 years of playing softball together and always supporting each other. I will miss all my East Lyme teammates and coaches so much — thank you all for everything you have taught me. I will miss all the love, support and passion I got to share with everyone along the way."
