    H.S. roundup: Bacon girls edge Waterford cross country on tiebreaker

    Waterford — Bacon Academy remained unbeaten thanks to a tiebreaker, edging Waterford in an Eastern Connecticut Conference girls' cross country meet at Harkness Memorial State Park on Wednesday afternoon.

    The teams finished in a 28-28 tie, but Bacon Academy's Kaylea McCourt, who finished 10th overall in 24:53 and was the sixth Bacon runner to cross the finish line, had a faster time than Waterford's sixth-place finisher.

    Two-time ECC champion Jordan Malloy of Bacon dominated the field, finishing the 5K course in 19 minutes, 19 seconds, nearly three minutes faster than Waterford's Sarah Johnson (22:04). Tess Mathieu finished third for the Bobcats (4-0) while the next three finishers were Lancers – Abigail Maynard (22:24), Natalie Lombardi (23:38) and Sophie Marcille (23:48).

    Bacon had the next four as Caylin Davids was seventh (23:52), Sophia Falkowski eighth (24:11), Delaney Lima ninth (24:49) and McCourt 10th.

    Waterford is 1-1.

    Boys' cross country

    • Stonington's Ryan Gruczka was the individual winner, but Ledyard swept the next seven spots to defeat the Colonels 23-43 in the ECC. Gruczka was timed in 16:39 over his home course for the Bears (0-3) while the Colonels (2-2) followed with Chris Evans (18:18), Connor Duran (18:39), Nick Johansson (18:50), Tevian Elezar (18:53), Hayden Baber (19:17), Nick Smith (19:21) and JoJo Preciado (19:24). Chris Odell (19:26) added a ninth for Stonington.

    • Waterford used its depth to defeat Bacon Academy 22-39 in the ECC. Sean Corman won the race for the Lancers (2-0) in 17:19 and Zac Gamble finished third in 18:33. Waterford clinched the victory by taking places 5-9 behind Erik Carlson (18:35), Caleb Zane (18:37), Christian Montoya (19:05), Theo Joseph (19:12) and Luke Bartlett (19:13). Connor Wilcox finished second for the Bobcats (2-2) 17:41 while Ryan Moores was fourth (18:34) and Brendan Reas 10th (19:14).

    Boys' soccer

    • Alex Ard had a goal and two assists as Waterford outlasted Ledyard 3-2 in the ECC. Cody Brown and Oli Searle also scored goals for the Lancers (4-2), Miguel Flowers had an assist and goalie Casey White made seven saves. Daimon Pollard and Nick Washington scored for the Colonels (4-3) and goalie Blake McLeod made six saves.

    • Mike Caster had a goal and an assist and Grant Colson had two assists as Wheeler beat Grasso Tech 3-1 in an ECC game. Owen Foberg and Matt Pierce had goals, Keiran Boscoe had an assist and Matt Ryan made three saves for Wheeler (3-3). Luca Iglesias scored and Gabriel Derosiers made six saves for Grasso (0-3).

    Girls' soccer

    • St. Bernard scored twice in the first half and beat Wheeler 2-0 in an ECC game. Sienna Sferrazza and Angelica Tompkins had goals for the Saints (2-1), who outshot Wheeler 18-2. Elizabeth Hannaford had an assist for St. Bernard. Addie Hauptmann made 14 saves for Wheeler (0-3-1).

    Volleyball

    • Lyman Memorial remained unbeaten with a 25-11, 25-6, 25-6 win over Ledyard in an ECC match. April Beckwith had 26 assists and seven digs, Callie Nanos had seven kills and three aces and Anna Mathewsson had 14 digs and five aces for Lyman (6-0). Codee Carroll had 18 digs, Natalie Poulton had 11 digs and Kira Kassim had four kills and two aces for Ledyard (4-2).

    • Bacon Academy beat Wheeler 25-13, 25-22, 25-15 in an ECC match. Kiera Stewart had 14 assists, Leah Brown had six kills, Julia Baehr had five kills, Jen Whipple had six aces and Grace Gorreck had five aces for Bacon (3-2).
