Three new teams debut in The Day's coaches' poll after wild weekend

A few anonymous comments from voters in the high school football state coaches' poll following a wild Week 4:

    “It’s crazy. Isn’t it?”

“Really, no way to do this.”

    “Who knows LOL.”

It was that kind of a weekend as five teams ranked in the Top 10 of The Day's weekly poll lost.

    Hello Hall, Norwalk and Ridgefield.

Goodbye (perhaps for just now) Cheshire, Newtown and Shelton.

Hall (4-0) debuts at No. 5 after knocking off then-No. 4 Southington last Friday, 29-17. The Blue Knights fell to No. 10.

Former No. 10 Greenwich moved up to fourth after beating then-No. 5 Fairfield Prep on Saturday, 14-7. Prep dropped to ninth.

Norwalk is sixth after stunning then-No. 6 Cheshire with two late touchdowns for a wild 25-15 win last Saturday. The Bears are 4-0 for the first time since 2011.

No.  7 Shelton was mowed down by Trumbull on Friday night, 41-7. Shelton clobbered Greenwich, 35-14, the previous week (Sept. 24). Trumbull is 2-1. It lost to Staples in Week 1 (27-0), which was thrashed by Cheshire in Week 3 (42-14).

Ridgefield (2-1) moved up to seventh after edging then-No. 8 Newtown last Friday, 10-7. Ridgefield's other loss was to Greenwich in Week 2, 42-34.

That Greenwich has beaten two Top 10 teams while being clobbered by Shelton is a perfect example of how looney the first four weeks have been.

Top-ranked St. Joseph (4-0) picked up two more first-place votes this week and has nine overall. It has impressed voters the past two weeks with wins over Windsor (45-22, Sept. 24) and Xavier (42-7, last Saturday).

Second-ranked Darien (4-0) received the other four first-place votes.

Eastern Connecticut Conference unbeatens Killingly (3-0), Fitch (3-0) and Ledyard (4-0) all received votes.
