Hewitt Farm

Town: North Stonington

Directions: Take I-95 N to Exit 92. Turn left on Rt. 2 N, follow past the rotary and the schools. Take a right on Hewitt Rd., parking available to the immediate left.

Where to Park: A designated, unpaved parking area is on left side of the road.

Description: The Hewitt Farm property is a town-owned, 104-acre property featuring forested trails, streams, hayfields and an old cemetery. Fishing is popular in the Hewitt Pond, which is formed by the Hewitt Dam and was damaged in the March 2010 floods.

A farm house, built in 1750, overlooks the dam and remains occupied. Three main, well-marked trails – Loop, Wyassup and Bicentennial – add up to more than a mile of moderate hiking. It's a four-season property that users can run, walk, bike, ski or travel on horseback. Dogs are invited, too, but motorized vehicles are prohibited.

Regulations: Respect the privacy of homes on the property. Carry in and out all trash. Dogs, horses and bikes allowed. No motorized vehicles.

Amenities: Canoe and kayak river access.

Natural Features: Forested trails, fishing pond and Shunock River, meadows and hayfields. Tipping Rock, a "glacial erratic," is located on the Bicentennial Trail.

Fees: None.

Things to Note: Open year-round. Watch for poison ivy.
