    Get carbon facts clear

Robert Methot claims in his letter “Nuclear fuel chain produces much carbon” (June 10), that The Day is wrong to claim that nuclear power is carbon-free. What The Day actually claimed is that Millstone generates power without emitting greenhouse gases, which is true. And if Millstone were closed, it would be replaced mostly with natural gas plants as has happened after a number of nuclear plant closures across the country.

What Robert is concerned with, quite understandably, is the total life-cycle of greenhouse gas emissions associated nuclear power. The good news is that nuclear, solar, and wind power all have comparable total life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions per kWh of electricity generated, according to an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change meta-study of some 50 papers on the subject.
