Catala wants close look at New London school finances

The 2017 election is behind us and the new, New London Board of Education has been seated. I was glad to vote to have two regular board meetings each month. These two monthly meetings will be crucially important. There is much to be discussed.

The board will be hiring a new superintendent. This person must come to New London with a strong magnet school background. The next superintendent will need to clean up the disarray among the administrators in central office. The days of sweeping mishaps and mistakes under the rug must end.

Dr. Stephen Tracy, who is the interim superintendent, has done a great job thus far in seeing that the board is told about the skeletons that were left in the closet over the past few years. He has vowed to inform the board of any administration hires and any memorandums of understanding the district engages in.

What must happen in the next month or so is a full forensic audit of the New London Public School’s Finance Department. We need to be sure the district’s finances are being spent according to the budget and appropriately. This is crucial and needs to happen.
