New London school board member stands by criticism of principal

I take much pride in working on behalf of all children who attend New London Public Schools. I would be derelict in my job as a school board member if I did not ask questions and demand answers.

On March 14 a group of kindergarteners participated in an event that was questionable. I made a public statement that the principal should have known about what goes on in his school and should step down. I stand by what I stated. A building principal must know the pulse of his building, where every class is at all times. In an attempt to keep all children safe at all schools in New London, I will be holding a policy committee meeting on April 4 at 6 p.m.

I will have on the agenda all policies that deal with students leaving the building for field trips, recess, and other reasons to be outside of the four walls of the classroom. I have requested a full report on the March 14 events at Harbor School. This incident is behind us. However, it is my job to report to the citizens, parents, voters, students, and taxpayers and to ensure them that I am doing all I can to keep their children safe.

I will not apologize for wanting to assure that every single child who walks through the doors of our schools is safe.
