Norwich Public Utility rate hikes too much

Mission: To make Norwich a better place to live, work, and do business. Copied and pasted directly from the Norwich Public Utility website. Confusing?

How do rate increases of 9.1 percent for gas, 5.4 percent for electricity, 8.68 percent for water and 6.54 percent for sewer create a better place to live, work or do business? How many business will close due to these increases? Norwich businesses gone? When the businesses close, who will work in Norwich? Jobs eliminated? Lost businesses equal lost tax revenue. Utility increases followed by more tax increases. Norwich a better place to live?

Norwich Public Utilities’ management claims inflation is to blame for these increases. The United States government has not seen the inflation the NPU is experiencing. The Social Security Administration had a cost of living adjustment of just two percent last year. NPU management will raise spending on the backs of our seniors, who can least afford it.

The NPU Board of Commissioners meets April 24 at 6 p.m. at the NPU offices. They seldom refuse rate increases for the NPU. Write or call the council, mayor, and  commission. Attend the meeting. If Norwich is important to you, let your voice be heard.
