Which is it Connecticut? Prevent elderly suicide or enable it?

Connecticut has already taken a stand with regard to suicide having invested in the research and implementation of a plan, namely, the State of Connecticut Suicide Prevention Plan 2020. It’s Dedication Statement: “This plan…is dedicated to the Connecticut residents…who are affected in profound ways by suicide.”

According to the plan, the elderly are at particular risk for suicide due to various reasons ending their statement with: Furthermore, their social isolation may make them less likely to be rescued.“

The State of Connecticut on the one hand wants to rescue the elderly, but on the other hand some in the Connecticut legislature want to assist in their suicide through passage of HB 5898. Which is it, Connecticut? More importantly, who is to determine for the elderly when decisions are legally out of their hands; someone who may be in a position to benefit by their death?

According to the Connecticut Suicide Plan: “Suicide deaths are largely preventable, and even one death is too many.”

    Stand by your plan, Connecticut!
