    New London now more vibrant

David Collins should apologize to New London and its mayor, Mike Passero, for his column “Mayor Passero fears gentrification?” (Nov. 14), putting down this wonderful diverse, historic and picturesque town. He compares it to towns that have very different landscapes and often more expensive real estate. New London is a small cash-strapped city where much is owned by nonprofits, colleges and governments that don’t pay taxes or very little.

Four years ago, I wanted to move closer to my family. It wasn’t until I discovered New London with its affordable housing and wonderful diverse citizenship that I bought here. My mother and brother also realized what a unique place this is and bought property here as well.

In four years, New London has become more vibrant. Mike Passero was re-elected for a reason. He has been working hard and has put forward some controversial ideas that bring the citizens to attention and keep the city moving forward.

I like the friendly mix of races and political affiliates. Everybody from neighboring towns comes to walk and explore the city’s charms. The housing is still affordable and there is lots of variety. The taxes are high in all of Connecticut, but New London’s affordability helps offset that. I’m glad I moved here.
