Toughen up, power outages happen after bad storms

I take issue with the numerous negative comments concerning Eversource’s response to power disruptions caused by Tropical Storm Isaias (“Thousands Still Without Power”). Rates aside, it is appalling that the governor, so many local leaders, and ordinary citizens have taken to the internet and print media to whine about Eversource’s efforts to restore power. Every available lineman (and woman) are on the case, working night and day under dangerous conditions to restore your electricity.

Poles snapped, trees blew down, sputtering energized cables were left on the ground, transformers exploded – these are the consequences of any named storm that makes its way through our state. Neighboring states and private contractors also provide personnel and equipment on a moment’s notice to address these massive outages. This kind of work requires skilled people in many disciplines, and these resources are not infinite. So it’s going to take some time, period.

Of course, Eversource could hire, say, a thousand more of these workers permanently, and maybe buy more equipment to stem the whining and complaining. That, of course, would make your electric rates zoom even higher. Then we would have more investigations, whining, and complaining.

Or maybe we could just toughen up a bit.
