Georgia voting laws harken to dark period of Black voter suppression
Georgia is on my mind but not for the reasons Ray Charles sang about. The blatant signing of the legislation by the governor in the name of preventing voter fraud is similar to the tactics used to enhance voter suppression that I remember so well. (I grew up in Charleston, South Carolina). Making it a crime to give someone a bottle of water if they are standing in line to vote is the same mentality as having someone pay a poll tax or read the Constitution (and interpret it) in order to register to vote. It was Jim Crow then and it is Jim Crow now. To those who might not know it, Jim Crow is not a bird. What's next?
