Mother Bailey House a treasure to preserve
Does everyone in southeastern Connecticut and nearby Rhode Island know that the Mother Bailey House is to be sold to a developer for a dollar? And sold fast? Is the Smithsonian aware?
(Editor's note: A vote on the possible sale of the home was on the Groton City Council agenda for Monday, June 21 but that meeting was canceled.)
Will The Day take a picture of the facade as the developer tries to save it as the Mother Bailey House crumbles to the ground? If the facade cannot be saved the developer can still build his one-family house and his three duplexes on the open space.
Never mind that women were just starting to get the attention they deserved. What a spot for starting a historical tour this could be.
The Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation (organized 1975) could help us. They have helped many projects in the area.
We must not give the waterfront away for $1. City of Groton needs places to sit and look at our beautiful sunsets. Please Mr. Mayor, give us three months and we will show you we can all save Mother Bailey’s heritage.
