Biden should step aside in 2024
From my perspective, Joe Biden was the decent guy who rescued us from the clutches of Donald Trump and his corrupt posse, "Most say nation on wrong track, including Dems: AP-NORC poll" (June 29). That is his legacy for the history books. He got trapped in a mess not of his own making, but he risks everything if he follows in Ruth Bader Ginsberg's path of refusing to step aside when the time is right.
Had Ginsberg retired at 80 and allowed President Obama to name her replacement to the Supreme Court, we would not have had the tragic ruling of last week overturning Roe v. Wade. Savvy readers know that Roberts did not join the majority in that effort and would have sided with the liberal majority had there been one (and there would have been one, despite Trump's three appointments.) Ginsberg, for all her brilliance, thought she was irreplaceable as so many tragic figures have.
It is time for the Democratic party to find another candidate for 2024 while respecting Mr. Biden's efforts in the tough world he inherited. But we cannot allow him to take down the whole structure of the liberal democracy we claim to treasure.
