    Reasons kids need cell phones

The story and following comments regarding kids and cell phones in school (The Day, Oct. 25) had a lot of points for not allowing them; however, aside from the children being able to contact 911 in an emergency, there are other reasons for allowing them. My granddaughters live in Boston where regular school buses as we know them are not generally used. They are given passes to use public transportation. Sometimes the time schedules or routes change and the kids need to be able to check the routes and times so they are not stranded. They also have to scan a QR code to gain school access. Phones must be turned off while in the classroom.

These are situations that do not come in to play in a rural or small town environment, but in most cities, kids ride public transportation and the phones are instrumental if nothing else for personal protection.
