Zoning regulations need reform
As an advocate for responsible zoning practices, I believe it's time to make zoning laws more inclusive and accessible for all residents. I'm deeply concerned about the current zoning laws in our state and towns.
By streamlining the zoning process and promoting flexibility in housing options, we can create vibrant, sustainable communities that meet the diverse needs of our residents. Municipalities often resist developments beyond large lot sizes, contributing to suburban sprawl and limiting housing options. This resistance not only affects the landscape of our communities, but also places significant hurdles in the path of individual homeowners.
Homeowners face obstacles when modifying their homes, such as converting them into duplexes or adding mother-in-law suites/accessory dwelling units. Local municipalities frequently oppose such changes, hindering homeowners' rights to adapt their properties to their needs. I have talked to numerous homeowners in East Lyme about their frustration with the zoning regulations, and I have seen the East Lyme Zoning Commission grill homeowners about changes to their property.
While the controversial policy of allowing affordable housing on rural land has sparked debate, it's crucial to address the broader issue of zoning accessibility for all residents, not just developers.
