    Be vigilant against prejudice

It was an interesting test for Trump supporters at a small rally in Mystic last weekend. A man dressed in a Ku Klux Klan robe joined their group. In their defense, the Trump supporters say they didn't know him, but their response was surprising. The group allowed a Klansman to march with them for well over an hour. They could have asked him to leave. If he wouldn't, they could have moved away and left him standing alone. But reports say they did not; they marched next to him, holding vulgar signs, while the Klansman shouted that the KKK supports Trump, which is true.

Seeing a Klansman in Mystic is disturbing. It would be very frightening to a gay person or a person of color. For decades the Klan terrorized and killed minorities in the South. I don't want our community to become a place where this sight is acceptable. Let us all rise up and make it known that we are a welcoming community where minorities are safe. It will only remain safe if we speak out and remain vigilant against prejudice and intimidation.
