An idea for parking in Mystic
I do not believe that installing parking meters is "an effective parking strategy to improve parking conditions in Mystic.” That strategy will not increase parking availability or quell the heavy demand for parking.
I believe the best strategy is to procure an electric "hop on-hop off bus similar to what is found in most tourist locations around the country. Some years back I discussed this concept with local police and the chamber of commerce — both were very supportive of the concept.
I would envision the large Olde Mistick Village parking lot to be an ideal parking and pick-up point for the bus, which would make a continuous loop through town during the day. People would be allowed to be dropped off and picked up at clearly marked locations. Storekeepers would pay a small fee for keeping store discount coupons on a rack in the bus. Passengers would pay a small fee and the bus would be handicapped accessible.
The trolley would hold no more than 15 people so a regular driving license is all that is required. The weight of the trolley would not exceed the bridge requirement. These trolleys look like the old original trolleys and have heat and air conditioning. They would make an attractive addition to the character of Mystic and go a long way in alleviating the current parking situation in Mystic.
