Democracy hangs in the balance
In Saturday’s Day article by Jennifer Rubin, “We Need a Different Model of Journalism” Ms. Rubin discusses the loss of effective journalism across the country. She is correct and that loss has scary implications for democracy.
With this trend, how does the average person keep track of or understand how politics work and how local tax dollars are spent? We in New London County are extremely lucky to have The Day, which is unique in journalism and owned by a public trust. The Day remains independent and not only covers national news but also local politics including school board meetings, city council meetings and other public hearings.
Reporters like Claire Bessette work tirelessly, providing us the information necessary to stay abreast of local matters. We must appreciate this fact and support this valuable resource. An informed public depends on it.
However, even a newspaper held “in trust” must be supported by the public. Effective journalism is critical for the maintenance of effective government. As Jennifer Rubin states, “The preponderance of voters who get no news suggests the very notion of an “informed electorate” might become a thing of the past.
Democracy hangs in the balance. We must support this valuable resource.
