Gaza: the war must end now
On Oct. 7, 2023, 1,400 Israelis and foreigners were murdered by Hamas and other Palestinian terrorists. On that date, at least 250 were taken hostage. About 100 have not been released. These are atrocious and unacceptable crimes and are unquestionably crimes against humanity.
Since that date, over 44,000 inhabitants of Gaza have been killed. About two-thirds are women and children. Many more have been wounded. About 10 children a day are being amputated to this date; 885 health care workers have been killed in Gaza and the West Bank. Targeting of health care workers and health care facilities is against the fundamental right of individuals to access essential healthcare services. This may constitute a war crime, according to the U.N. and also are unquestionably crimes against humanity.
As a physician, it is intolerable to accept that this suffering continues. The war must end now. All hostages must be released. Both Israelis and Palestinians must recognize that each should have a safe and sovereign nation. Does this sound like utopia? Yes, it does. Is this the only long-term solution. Yes it is.
