Hope still our guiding light
I admit it. I’ve taken things for granted, living in this land of freedom for my 77 years. In my lifetime, I’ve never given a thought to what frightening turn my life might take because of the arbitrary whims of autocratic leaders. As a country, we have fallen short of our ideals, but they remain our guideposts.
We’ve learned from the past that every segment of our population is to be valued, be they Native Americans, Blacks or immigrants; no one is to be scapegoated. Women are full participants in our society, and predators against them are to be held to account. We do not live in fear, because of who we love. We Americans have a track record of helping the vulnerable. Disabled folks are valued, not mocked. We honor our veterans, never minimizing their service.
Disagreements arise, but we aim to welcome open dialogue and peaceful protest. Understanding, not putdowns, brings us together. We are a beacon of hope for the world where people are not judged by their skin color or their country of origin, but by their character. Our elected leaders inspire us with their integrity, guiding us to become a better citizenry. I pray that I still feel this way next Thanksgiving.
