A local history lesson aboard the schooner Amistad

Third-grade students from Sarah Dipollino's class at Winthrop STEM Magnet Elementary School in New London spot jellyfish in the water off the bow of the schooner Amistad during a class visit Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016. The visit is part of a third-grade local history program through the New London Maritime Society which will bring all 300 third grade students in the city's public schools to visit the Amistad and the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse. NLMS's local history program, under the direction of NLMS educator Jody Barthel, is provided to New London Public Schools free of charge and is supported by grants from the Community Foundation of Southeastern Connecticut, The Anthony & Elizabeth Enders Fund, the Bodenwein Foundation and the Morgan McGinley Family Fund. Discovering Amistad is providing the new education program free of charge and New London's third-graders are the first to experience that program.(Sean D. Elliot/The Day)
