Recount confirms school board seat for Green Party in New London
New London — A recount of votes cast in the Nov. 7 municipal election has confirmed Green Party member Mirna Martinez is the winner in a tight race for the seventh seat on the Board of Education.
Martinez retained a 9-vote edge, 1,152 to 1,161, over Republican candidate Kathy Skrabacz, according to results of a recount performed Wednesday at City Hall. The vote counts were identical to the Election Day numbers.
Head moderator K. Robert Lewis said results would not be finalized until after they are submitted to the Office of the Secretary of the State.
Martinez will be sworn in at a later date alongside Republican Susan Tierney and Democrats Jason Catala, Rebecca Amanti, Jefferey Hart, Regina Mosely and Manny Rivera.
Martinez is likely to be among a group of at least three members vying for the position of board president.
