Several area libraries will be participating in the seventh annual Take Your Child to the Library Day this Saturday, Feb. 3. The event was started in 2011 by retired Waterford Public Library children’s librarian Nadine Lipman to encourage families to visit their local libraries and showcase the role that libraries play in their communities. The event is now celebrated all over the world on the first Saturday in February.

The Public Library of New London will be holding scavenger hunts all day, with crafts from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and a Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center presentation on cold weather adaptations at 1:30 p.m. All families that visit the library on Saturday will also have all late fees waived.

The Groton Public Library will also be celebrating the birthday of Stretch the Giraffe on Take Your Child to the Library Day, with drop-in activities and crafts all day and birthday cake at 11 a.m.

The Bill Memorial Library in Groton will have cookies and hot chocolate for patrons, as well as crafts, scavenger hunts and the chance to win a jar of chocolate if anyone can guess the correct number of pieces.

The Wheeler Library in North Stonington will be continuing the festivities all week with scavenger hunts, crafts and their “Love Your Library” bulletin board project.
