Stonington Historical Society to discuss local Irish history, establish archives

Stonington -- The Stonington Historical Society’s new Irish Presence Committee will sponsor a presentation on the “Irish Presence in Stonington-Westerly 1670-1970" on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the society’s Richard W. Woolworth Library.

Borough resident Cormac O’Malley, who serves on the Board of Advisors for Glucksman Ireland House, New York University’s Center for Irish and Irish-American Studies, will offer an overview of Irish migration to the Stonington area while Pawcatuck native and retired middle school teacher Larry O’Keefe will discuss the identities of the Irish immigrants, their origins in Ireland, and local immigrant neighborhoods. He will also discuss their work in ship and railway building, fishing, quarries and mills.

The IPC also plans to hold a series of follow-up presentations and is soliciting photographs and documents (either scanned copies or originals) for the establishment of Irish-American archives at the Woolworth Library. A collection day will be held on April 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the library.
