O'Niantic 5K to be held on St. Patrick's Day
East Lyme — The Hartford Marathon Foundation’s O'Niantic 5K on St. Patrick's Day, Saturday, March 17, is expected to draw 1,200 athletes to the area, who will run through downtown Niantic and Pine Grove, according to a news release.
The O'Niantic 5K starts at 9:45 a.m., while the HMF FitKids Run starts at 9 a.m. Participants in the 5K can pick up race packets in front of Niantic Bay Bicycles, where they will later cross the finish line. Runners are encouraged to bring nonperishable food donations for the Gemma E. Moran UnitedWay/Labor Food Center, the release states. Post-race festivities will be held at Smarty’s Restaurant & Pub.
The O'Niantic 5K is part of a four-race St. Patrick's Day themed series. The other races are: O'Shenanigans 5K, Southington, March 10; Courthouse O'Putnam 5K, Putnam, March 11; and O'Hartford 5K, Hartford, March 18.
The Hartford Marathon Foundation has announced the following traffic impacts and road closures in Niantic on Saturday, March 17:
• Methodist Street will be closed to all vehicles from 7:30 a.m. until 11 a.m.
• Hope Street will be closed to all vehicles from 8:45 a.m. until 11 a.m.
The following roads will remain open for use by vehicles and race participants from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m., but people should expect minor delays and use caution: Pennsylvania Ave. (Route 161) from Smith to Grand Streets; Grand Street; Smith Avenue; Smith Street; Pine Grove Road; South Street; Cherry Street; North Main Street; Broadway; Center Street and Cove Street.
The Hartford Marathon Foundation asks people to use alternate routes during the race if impacted. A course map is available at bit.ly/ONiantic5K.
