I can’t remember why a conversation with friends brought me to almond paste. Whoever knows when my mind wanders to food? But of my three friends, two never heard of almond paste or marzipan, and just one barely remembers those fruit candies that looked like tiny bananas or oranges or berries but tasted only of almond paste.

Sometimes those “fruits” are coated in dark chocolate. I promised my friends to take some almond paste the next time we have dinner.

But a couple of days later, I thought about those almond scones from 4 & 20 Blackbirds in Guilford. While that pastry shop is the best of its kind in Connecticut and promises shelves full of cookies, cakes and pies, it is the almond scones that I crave.

I called them and they still sell them. They are only open Tuesday, Thursdays. Friday and Saturday, and scones may go quickly, so you may want to call ahead.
