New London Finance Board expected to vote on city budget today

New London — The city’s Finance Board is scheduled to meet at 4:30 p.m. today in the city finance office on Masonic Street to discuss and potentially vote on the city’s proposed $49.9 million general government and $42.9 million education budgets for fiscal year 2018-19.

The board’s vote is one in a series of steps in the budget approval process. The City Council approved the first of three readings of the combined $92.8 million proposed spending plan on April 30.

The city charter prohibits the City Council from increasing the budgets beyond what is approved by the Finance Board without authorization of eight members of the Appropriating Board — which consists of all seven city councilors and all five Finance Board members.
