New London — The New London Fire Department added three certified firefighters to its ranks on Tuesday. A swearing-in ceremony was held at City Hall for firefighters Markeno Grant, Nicholas Petrizzi III and Brian DeSilva.

Petrizzi most recently worked as a firefighter at the Electric Boat Fire Department. He is a former member of the Waterford Fire Engine Company 1, where he was named career firefighter of the year in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

DeSilva is also a former member of the Electric Boat Fire Department and for 10 years volunteered with the Taftville Fire Department, where he was named firefighter of the year in 2009.

Grant is a former member of the Belltown Fire Department in Stamford and a member of the Connecticut National Guard. He most recently worked as a public safety officer at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

All three are New London residents.

The positions are funded through a federal SAFER, or Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response, firefighter assistance program grant, New London’s Chief Administrative Officer Steven Fields said.
