Parties endorse candidates for 43rd District state House seat

On Wednesday members of the Republican and Democratic parties in Stonington and North Stonington endorsed their respective candidates to vie for the soon to be vacant 43rd District state House seat.

Shaun Mastroianni, a member of the Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission and a borough burgess, will be the Republican candidate pursuing the seat, while Stonington Selectwoman Kate Rotella received the Democratic endorsement.

Mastroianni, 37, ran unopposed for the Republican nomination, with no other candidate announcing their candidacy before the convention. Meanwhile, Rotella received the endorsement of the Democratic convention over Pawcatuck resident Chris Donahue, a sales consultant at Valenti Auto Mall in Mystic.

However, Donahue did receive enough votes to qualify for the primary election, if he so chooses.

Rotella previously had been endorsed by state Rep. Diana Urban, D-North Stonington, who has been the 43rd District’s representative for the past nine terms. Urban also has said she is helping to run Rotella's campaign.

Urban announced in February that she did not intend to seek a 10th term in the General Assembly.
