    Area elementary students honored in NESS contest

    Several area elementary school students were recognized for their submissions to the New England Science and Sailing Foundation’s statewide calendar drawing contest. The calendar’s theme was “Long Island Sound and Its Watershed: What It Means to Me,” and more than 2,000 students submitted drawings for it.

    First place awards went to Dayne Elvis Lecy, a kindergartener at Murphy Elementary School in Montville; Evelyn Leff, a kindergartener at Niantic Center School; Julia Banda, a first grader at Preston Veteran’s Memorial School; Aidan Naktenis, a second grader at Niantic Center School; and Grace McKee, a fourth grader at Niantic Center School.

    Honorable Mention awards went to Evelyn Coronado, a kindergartener at Harbor School in New London; Lena Cosentino, a first grader at Niantic Center School; Landon Bourque, a second grader at Murphy Elementary School; Lilian Harney, a third grader at West Broad Street School in Pawcatuck; Matayo Swepson, a fourth grader at West Broad Street School; Shea Cullen, a fourth grader at Murphy Elementary School, and Marcella Hamm, a fifth grader at St. Michael School in Pawcatuck.
