Friends and Neighbors: Teacher gets Library of Congress residency honor

Carolyn Bennett, choral director at Wheeler High School, has been named as the 2018-2019 Library of Congress Performing Arts Teacher-In-Residence.

She was selected for her student work with the library’s resources, specifically studying the historical heritage of blues music and Connecticut-specific artists and supporting the creation of original pieces using the research.

“We are so fortunate to have someone like Carolyn Bennett on our staff at Wheeler,” Wheeler High School Principal Kristen St. Germain said in a release. “Her knowledge of her content area, mixed with her passion for music and the arts, allows our choral program to find great success each year. ... Carolyn has so much knowledge to share and the Library of Congress will certainly benefit from the year she spends there.”

Bennett will take a one-year leave from the high school to serve full-time at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., working in the Education Outreach Division.

She is a 2003 graduate of Ledyard High School and lives in North Stonington.
