Niantic Community Church’s Summer Suppers start July 10, and the room that is home to the homemade pies and desserts has been dedicated in memory of church member and expert baker Judy Layden.

Layden, who died earlier this year just before her 80th birthday, volunteered in the dessert room for 37 years, following in the footsteps of her mother, Erma Brailey. Members of the church noted Layden’s caring and genuine demeanor and her ability to bring out the best in everyone.

A plaque designating the “Judy Layden Memorial Pie Room” is located just outside the room, and Kris Lambert, a close friend of Layden, will take over as chair, coordinating desserts for the three Summer Suppers.

The Summer Suppers will be held at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. on July 10, July 24 and Aug. 7; take-out is also available. Dinner will include roast beef or roast turkey, vegetables and potatoes, bread and homemade desserts. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and younger. For more information, call (860) 739-6208. The church is located at 170 Pennsylvania Ave.
