Weather forces Connecticut Army National Guard chopper to land in restaurant parking lot

Four military helicopters flown by members of the Connecticut Army National Guard made precautionary landings — one in a restaurant parking lot — in Missouri on Monday.

The four CH-47 Chinooks were headed back to Connecticut from a month's worth of training in California when they hit severe weather in the St. Louis area, said Connecticut Army National Guard spokesman Maj. Michael Peterson.

One of the helicopters landed in a parking lot in Festus, Mo. Local media reported it to be a parking lot for Taytro’s Bar and Bistro.

No injuries were reported, and Peterson said late Monday that all four helicopters had relocated to a St. Louis area airport. Weather permitting, the group of 20 Guardsmen are expected to start the journey back to base in Windsor Locks on Tuesday. The Guardsmen are members of the 1-169 General Support Aviation Battalion.

“We are greatly appreciative of the understanding shown by those in the Festus area, and thank them for their support,” Peterson said.
