North Stonington schools to dismiss early

North Stonington — Public schools here have joined a growing list of those that are dismissing early Wednesday because of the heat.

The National Weather Service has placed the entire state in at least a heat advisory, with Hartford County under an excessive heat warning.

The heat index, or the temperature it feels like rather than the temperature it is, was expected to be between 100 and 104 degrees for much of the state.

Most early dismissals are happening at schools outside southeastern Connecticut, but districts and schools including Norwich Free Academy, Lyme-Old Lyme, Montville, Ledyard, Waterford and Groton have canceled or altered athletic practices.
