    Speedbowl cancels Saturday night races

Waterford — The New London-Waterford Speedbowl abruptly cancelled its racing series scheduled for Saturday night, leaving the future of the racetrack in doubt.

The Speedbowl posted a message on its website and Facebook page Friday night stating, "Due to unforeseen circumstances, the September 15th races at Speedbowl have been cancelled. We will post updates on both Facebook and our website."

In addition to its regular Saturday night series features, the Speedbowl was scheduled to host the Valenti Modified Racing Series and the Northeastern Midget Association.

Attempts to reach Speedbowl officials on Saturday were unsuccessful, but Jack Bateman, president of the VMRS, told Shawn Courchesne of the popular racing website RaceDayCT.com, "All I know is they cancelled the show for (Saturday). I don't know anything else. I just heard it was some legal crap going on."

The Speedbowl's Wild 'n Wacky Wednesday night series has already concluded for the season, but there are still three regular Saturday night cards scheduled for Sept. 22, Sept. 29 and Oct. 6, followed by its finale weekend on Oct. 20-21.
