After UPS Store closure, Two Sisters Shipping expands into Groton

Groton — After the UPS Store in Groton Square Shopping Center closed in April, Kim Maxson saw a shipping void in the region.

So last month, she opened the second location of Two Sisters Shipping and Business Center, at 105 Bridge St.

"We can feel the economy getting better now, and that was another defining factor in us opening up here," Maxson said.

She said the services offered are basically the same as those at the shuttered UPS Store: shipping for the United States Postal Service, UPS, DHL and FedEx, along with packaging, faxing and copying, professional printing, and notary public services.

The store also ships pallets and crates, and provides mailbox rentals.

After running a freight business out of Slater Mill, Maxson and her sister, Lynn Hardell, opened the first location of Two Sisters in Jewett City 15 years ago. Hardell is no longer with the business, but the name remains.

The internet has led to a lot of changes over the years, with a lot of business now coming from returns and Amazon drop-offs.

Chatty and friendly, Maxson said, "It's a fun business because you get close with your customers." She expressed particular gratitude for the Navy wives who have been helping her get the word out about Two Sisters.

"We try to be more of a hometown, friendlier place, than if you went to a big-box place," Maxson said.

For now, the Two Sisters location in Groton is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, but starting Nov. 1, Maxson plans to be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Greater Norwich Area Chamber of Commerce is holding a ribbon-cutting/grand opening ceremony for the new location on Nov. 9 from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.
