Alexandria J. DeGunia, a sophomore at the Science and Technology Magnet High School in New London and a staff sergeant with the Three Rivers Young Marines, was selected as the 4th Batallion Young Marine of the Year.

Every October, the Young Marines begins its process of selecting a National Young Marine of the Year. This endeavor begins at the unit level, with the Batallion level being the next highest.

DeGunia, a resident of Waterford, is a member of the New London Naval Junior ROTC Program and the debate team; she is also a member of the varsity cross country and indoor and outdoor track teams. This past summer, she attended Senior Leadership School at Camp Rilea, Ore., for the Young Marines program and the Great American History Adventure through Washington, D.C. and Virginia.
