Police commissioners table decision on boathouse parking spots

Stonington — The Board of Police Commissioners on Thursday tabled a decision on a controversial plan to place seven parallel parking spots along Route 27 for the proposed Mystic River Boathouse Park.

The board said it would delay its decision until a workshop could be held on the issue early next year.

The Boathouse Park Implementation Committee needs the police commission to approve the parking spots in order to get the state Department of Transportation to approve its plan. Police Chief J. Darren Stewart has expressed concerns about having the spots along the busy street but First Selectman Rob Simmons has said they would act as a traffic calming measure. They would also add to the 14 parking spots contained in the master plan for the park. That plan will go to the Planning and Zoning Commission for approval, possibly in February.
