Stonington committee schedules West Broad Street School open houses

Stonington — The Stonington Facilities Committee has scheduled a series of open houses at West Broad Street School as it works toward determining options for the future of the building.

The school closed at the beginning of this month, as students moved to the renovated and expanded West Vine Street School.

    The open houses are scheduled for April 24 from 5 to 7 p.m., April 30 from noon to 2 p.m. and May 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At the open houses, residents will be given index cards to write down their remembrances of the school, as well as what they would like done or not done with the property.

The committee has been given the responsibility of developing options and costs for what should be done with both West Broad Street School and the School Administration Building in Old Mystic, which will close in September. Among the possibilities are reuse, sale and leasing.

The committee will submit its report to the Board of Selectmen. The committee said a final decision about the future of both schools likely will be determined at a referendum.

The committee holds regular meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Human Services Building. The next meeting is May 14.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
