The Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Pittsburgh (SSN 720) approaches New London Ledge Light on Tuesday as it departs New London Harbor for the final time. The Pittsburgh is bound for Washington state to begin the decommissioning process.
The boat, built at Electric Boat, was launched in 1984 and commissioned in 1985. During the Persian Gulf War in 1991, it became the first submarine in the Atlantic fleet to fire in combat since World War II. The Pittsburgh completed its final deployment in February.
