Friends and Neighbors: ELHS freshman tops in regional gymnastics event

East Lyme High School freshman Madeline Fraser competed April 13-14 at the Level 8 Regional Gymnastics Championships at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass., placing first all-around in her age group, scoring a 38.225.

She also placed first on the uneven bars with a 9.8, and first on the balance beam with a 9.5, making her a three-time champion at the meet. The Regional Championships are attended by the top 25 gymnasts from New England and New York.

Because of her performance at the Connecticut State Gymnastics Competition in March, Fraser earned a spot on the CT Super Team to go on to represent the state at the Regional Championships. She did this by qualifying first All-Around at the State Meet, where she also won the uneven bars and floor exercise events.

She is currently ranked among the top 100 gymnasts nationally (53rd) for her season-high score on the uneven cars, which is a 9.825.

Fraser attends Connecticut Gymnastics Academy, a private gym in Wallingford, where her year-round schedule includes 22 hours of training weekly, five days a week.
