Seaport's Latitude 41 restaurant to operate until end of 2020

Mystic — The president and owner of the local firm that operates Latitude 41 at Mystic Seaport Museum is assuring patrons and those who have scheduled weddings and other events at the restaurant that they will take place, as its contract does not expire until Dec. 31, 2020.

Charles Spathakis of Coastal Gourmet Group said he was flooded with calls Friday from people who have scheduled events at the restaurant after The Day published a story that reported Mystic Seaport had announced plans to demolish the restaurant and construct a 27-room boutique hotel and new restaurant in its place. He said they were worried their events would be canceled.

“Everything is normal. Nothing is changing,” he said. “We will continue operating and all weddings will take place.”

The new hotel is part of a larger project that also calls for opening up almost an acre of space in its Collections Research Center to publicly exhibit many of the 460 boats in its collection while the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration, which develops high-tech vehicles for underwater exploration plans to construct an underwater research and education center, create interactive, hands-on displays in the museum’s Clift Block building, and build a large, 20-foot-deep tank to test its underwater vehicles and robots. The museum does not have a time frame for the project, as it first needs to obtain approval from the Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission.

Spathakis, who has run Latitude 41 and the museum’s food service operation for the past 10 years, stressed that no work can start on the building until after the contract ends.

He added he continues to take reservations for events and said it is not definite his contract would not be renewed. That will depend on the outcome of the Planning and Zoning Commission application.

Museum spokesman Dan McFadden confirmed Friday that Coastal Gourmet has a contract through Dec. 31, 2020, and that the museum expects “to continue its great relationship” with the company until its completion.

“They do a wonderful job and they provide a great service,” he said.
