Rains prompt Stonington to close some shellfishing areas

Stonington — Heavy rains on Thursday prompted the town to close some of its shellfishing areas.

The Stonington Shellfish Commission announced that it has closed two conditional shellfishing areas: Area A and Outer Quiambaug Cove. They will "remain closed to the harvesting of clams, oysters and mussels for a minimum of seven days," commission Chairman Donald L. Murphy said in the announcement.

For updates on the status of shellfishing areas, people may call the commission's information line at (860) 599-7575.
