Powerful storms cause flooding across region

The strong thunderstorms that swept through the region early Monday night resulted in flash flooding in some areas.

In New London, police and firefighters were busy just past 7:30 p.m. responding to reports of several vehicles stuck in high water.

On Water Street behind the municipal parking garage, a white minivan was stuck with water halfway up its wheels. No one was inside. Police temporarily closed the road and detoured other drivers through the parking lot.

Police and firefighters also also blocked off a portion of Bank Street, at Tilley Street, where water completely covered the roadway. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning and flash flood warning effective until 11:15 p.m. Monday.
