Police: Stonington school employee was 'heavily intoxicated' while chaperoning field trip

Mystic — A now former paraprofessional at Mystic Middle School was arrested in May while chaperoning a school field trip to Manchester High School and being found intoxicated in a school hallway, according to police.

Stacy L. Shaw, 51, of Mystic was charged with risk of injury to a child, a felony, and released on a $10,000 nonsurety bond.

Shaw, who has pleaded not guilty, is slated to appear Aug. 16 in Manchester Superior Court for a pretrial conference.

The personnel report prepared for the Board of Education’s June meeting shows that Shaw had resigned her position.

Shaw’s attorney, Walter Shalvoy of Newtown, said Tuesday afternoon he would contact Shaw to see if she wished to comment on the incident. The Day did not hear again from Shalvoy before deadline.

Tim Smith, the principal at Mystic Middle School, now known as Stonington Middle School, said that on May 17, students were on a musical adjudication field trip, which involves a stop at Manchester High School where their musical performances are judged. The students then continue on to the Six Flags New England amusement park in Agawam, Mass.

While the Mystic Middle School students were performing, Smith said Shaw was found in an unoccupied hallway by the principal of Manchester High School. He said the principal suspected that Shaw was under the influence and notified the Manchester police officer assigned to the school.

Manchester police Lt. Ryan Shea said Tuesday a police report described Shaw’s demeanor as that of someone who was "heavily intoxicated." He said she admitted to drinking on the bus to Manchester High School and in a school bathroom while there. He said an empty nip bottle of vodka was found in the bathroom trash can by an assistant principal.

In addition, two nip bottles of Stoli vodka were found in her purse when she was taken into custody.

Shea said Shaw also admitted to drinking a glass of wine at home that morning, first telling police that took place at 9 a.m. and then revising that statement to say it was 6 a.m. He said she also told police she had been involved in a car accident in the Mystic Middle School lot before leaving on the trip.

Shea said Shaw was charged with risk of injury due to her level of intoxication and the fact she was responsible for chaperoning students on the trip.

“She probably was not in a state to be a chaperone,” he said.

Smith said he was informed of the incident by the Manchester High School principal.

Smith said he called the music teachers who were leading the trip and had them reassign the group of students that the paraprofessional was scheduled to chaperone at Six Flags to other chaperones.

He said he then notified Superintendent Van Riley, immediately reported the incident to the state Department of Children and Families and later that afternoon sent an email to parents informing them that a staff member he did not name was arrested while chaperoning the music field trip. He added in the email that, with all active personnel matters, “I can’t comment any further at this time.”
