The same people who are romanticized and looked at thru rose colored lens’s in American culture your Al Capones, John Gotti, (mob culture)etc. I can go down the list of hundreds of celebrated criminals in white culture, made a lot of these neighborhoods, areas, and cities bad way before black people were even able to have a seat at the criminality table. And not to justify a minority of Italian Americans path to criminality but if you read of how they they immigrated here, how they were discriminated against you can see how the path to criminality was created.

Although I think black people have the more infamous neighborhoods at this point in history, in my opinion it’s only because of the larger populations and them being located in major cities. Some of these rural places where the same lack of opportunity, and poverty happen you see the opioid crisis. Look at Charlestown, West Virginia Youngstown, Ohio and places all over this country where people are in despair where jobs went down large drug use and criminality went up. And guess what not a lot of black people in those areas.

Poor people are easily prosecuted which incentives law enforcement to pursue poorer neighborhoods we have an example of this in the 30’s right after the effects of the Great Depression. Which I think would be a better title for the black experience in this country but I digress.

A much larger part of the white population was poor in this country in the 30’s and whites committed a greater percentage of street crime. At this time whites then accounted for nearly 80 percent of those in prisons and jails compared to 36 percent today. I know we like to all have that epiphany moment of “aghhhh ha” I got it. But sorry Malcolm skin isn’t god’s gift to us to no longer use our logic and rationale and already assume someones attention because they have different skin then you.
All three of those places you named share one common denominator poverty, lack of opportunity. And all though portrayed none of those places are exclusively black. Detroit a few decades ago had wonderful black neighborhoods thriving until the manufacturing jobs went overseas, and you started to see the destruction you see now that poverty and lack of opportunity seems to create.

That's the question I wanted to ask? Why is crime enforced in urban areas if Blacks don't commit more crimes? His area concentration explanation doesn't make sense to me. The prisoner industrial complex and the way we incarcerate people and the rates is a problem, okay! I agree with that. How do you explain Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and COMPTON. I bet he locks his doors in those communities.

My pet peeve with Mr. Robinson is he talks about racism and implicit bias like it still exist in the same form as did back in the day. I get the impression that other than the elimination of segregated water fountains, schools and public spaces nothing has changed according to him. I can guarantee you if Mr. Robinson locks his car door visiting Black neighborhoods.

Can both black men’s experiences be true Dave or only the guy in LA? Or are we constrained only to your perspective of America ,those statistics, and your families American experience and not the Chief Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court ? He doesn’t seem like a guy that is searching for sympathy he’s telling his story why do people feel attacked by that? What makes you so dismissive of his story, but be so eager to share yours.

David Turco, there is no doubt that there is racism and bigotry in all races. But I doubt there was ever 50/50 black/white ratio, ever, anywhere. Especially in the 60's. I lived through the 60's and was there in the 50's during the beginning of the civil rights movement. Your argument doesn't hold water. How many white people were lynched, ever? How many were jailed, compared to minorities for the same crimes or misdemeanors, in this day and age? Also how many white, protestant or catholic churches have been attacked?
You have no idea what you are talking about. I'm what would be considered a WASP. Yes, I'm white, anglo saxton, protestant. I won't apologize for it. It's who/what I am. But I was also discriminated against. When we moved to Scotland when I was nine, what I heard was Yankee go home. We don't want you here. I was picked out because they saw me as American, because of my accent. Even though I was born in Scotland and left at 18 months. When I returned I had an American accent. That targeted me. I endured a lot of bullying.
I won't pretend to know what minorities go through. I'm not one. But I applaud what Chief Justice Robinson has done. Discrimination is everywhere.

Here's a little reality check from a black man, Larry Elder:https://townhall.com/columnists/larryelder/2019/11/07/what-michelle-obama-leaves-out-about-white-flight-n2556051?utm_source=thdaily&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=nl&newsletterad=11/07/2019&bcid=97dc8fe5a9df89459253d395805be70e&recip=198034

If you don't read it, in 1960's he went to high school in LA where the demographics were 50% white 50%black and on the first day, to be repeated daily, he witnessed black on white abuse but never witnessed white on black abuse...and it was bad. I have a family memeber who endured the same due to busing in the 70's in Kentucky and ditto for a girlfriend who grew up in Michigan and bused to a black school. They were both attacked daily. The boy continued to go to school but it marked him for life and the girl quickly dropped out of school creating her 'lost years' then taking most of her life to finish her education. Also in Elder's article he points on the federal statistic that of the 600,000 interracial black/white crime in 2018, 90% were black on white and 10% white on black. Hope that helps with the 'whole' story.

Wow the clairvoyance of Marian is beyond belief I mean to know in Southeastern Connecticut why people are locking there doors in Hartford deserves world recognition. I have to know your secret on how you do it did you sit down with these individuals and ask them why they locked there doors are do you have super powers? Can you and David see thru walls also ? This whole time I thought humans commented on these things but here we have two super hero’s blessing us with there presence.

I mean David’s right people lock there doors when they get in their car that is a fact, you know what else is a fact some people are racist.
Now I know that sounds shocking to two super hero’s but yes us humans are flawed. Now should I go with the judgement of the Chief Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court or should I just assume he has the inability to properly judge people who view him as a “threat”? Rhetorical question

"The culture his family came from and America's culture have different laws. "
What an odd statement. What is America's culture? It is my understanding that this country is made up of many different cultures. It's what makes us unique.

That's so sad Thomas. I hope she wasn't aware she was being watched.
This series is a conversation that is much needed. Racism in this country is alive and growing. It seems like we are going backwards instead of forward. Too many people think we shouldn't be talking about it at all. It makes them uncomfortable. But sweeping it under the rug is not going to make it go away. It is just going to make it worse.

I once had an African American step child and remember taking her shopping at Macy's when she was about 10 years old. I watched as she wandered about looking at things and I noticed that there was a salesperson following her constantly. There were plenty of other customers who could use this person's help, but she stuck with her surveillance. Never had this experience with any of my white children or step children.

Julia Bergman, I for one liked the article. The iceberg is a good analogy. Thank you Ms. Florin, for bringing this series and Justice Robinson for all you do to combat racism. I look forward to the next discussion.

The 'whole' picture? according to whom? How many people are just sitting in their cars when you walk by them on the street? Why do you assume it's because you walked by? Could be they just got in their cars and the first thing they do it lock them. I always lock my car even when moving when I enter New London - because it has a lot of dangerous people there not because they're black! Love the Obama virtue signaling with "knucklehead" sorry, ignorance of the law is not an excuse unless you're Hillary. The salient point of the tear jerking African immigrant story should be that it's about culture. The culture his family came from and America's culture have different laws. See why it's always an issue when people refuse to assimilate as they are now encouraged to do so by the media?
Just wondering how the Honorable justice would have treated a white male under the same circumstances, would he just assume that because he's white he would already know the laws? Please just follow the laws and enforce them. Maybe judges really should be forced to wear a blindfold so they aren't swayed either way by the color they see in front of them.

This man presides over the highest court; race had no effect on him accomplishing that goal. Many race-related issues seem to be fueled by the media and politics, as well as pop culture. There are people of all races and nationalities in all levels of socioeconomic classes. I am not saying racism doesnt exist, but I will also say that Ive observed that it also isnt exclusive to one race (caucasians). The sooner people realize this, the sooner we get past the division in this country

I am guessing the locked doors are for security from any threat, not just black individuals. I think constantly throwing race and discrimination complaints out there perpetuates the problem. We have come a long way and I wish black, red,and orange people would try to believe that.
